Identifying the S.T. Dupont Le Grand & New Le Grand Lighters
The S.T. Dupont Le Grand is one of the brand’s most technically innovative lighters, known for its dual ignition system—offering both a soft flame and a torch flame in a single body. Over time, it’s undergone a few design changes, so here’s how to tell if you have the original Le Grand or the updated New Le Grand.

First Generation Le Grand
- Typical Size: Approx. 66mm x 39mm x 14mm
- Flame Type: Dual ignition (soft flame + torch flame)
- Bottom Access Panel: Hinged metal flap conceals both the refill valve and flame Adjustment screw
- Flint Access: A button under the lid unlocks the flint compartment, which swings open
- Sound: Typically does not have the signature "ping"
- Flame Control: Roll the ignition roller for soft flame, push up once ignited for torch flame
- Other Notes: Bottom flap must be opened to refill butane or adjust flame height

New Le Grand
- Size: Approx. 66mm x 39mm x 14mm
- Flame Type: Still dual ignition, but more refined ignition system
- Bottom Design: Mimics the Ligne 2 bottom—no flap; refill valve and adjustment screw are exposed under a recessed cover
- Flint Access: Still under the lid but now requires the use of a screwdriver (included with the lighter) to remove the flint plate
- Sound: Most metal models are engineered to produce the signature “ping”
- Visual Differences: Bottom markings are more in line with current Ligne 2 and D-influenced styling
